Second Life 2

Second Life 2 draws upon the ancient Greek amphora, reimagining its familiar proportions through unexpected materials, colour and form. Referencing an object with a long history of both utility and cultural significance, the series explores the tension between the ancient and contemporary, the functional and sculptural.

Reclaimed textiles are stitched, manipulated and transformed into vessels that challenge expectations of materiality, permanence and value. Familiar forms become strange and ambiguous, their surfaces and vivid colour disrupting conventional associations with the historical vessel.

Building upon the ideas of Second Life, the series considers cycles of use, value and renewal. Materials once considered redundant are given a new physical and symbolic life, bringing together past and present through transformation. Second Life 2 explores the aesthetics of surprise and the possibility of finding new meaning in both discarded materials and inherited forms.
